The Joys of Nonfiction Booktalking (cont'd)

Snake Mistake

In this book, we will mention some of the pictures that are guaranteed crowd pleasers. For example, show the audience the picture of the puppy eating out of a bowl in Joanna Cole’s My Puppy Is Born, and listen for the chorus of “oohs” and “aahs.” Another approach is to tie the pictures in two books together (e.g., Mavis Smith’s A Snake Mistake and Alexandra Parsons's Amazing Snakes) and enjoy the audience reaction. Alice in Wonderland asked what  was the use of a book without pictures. Sure, you can booktalk a book without pictures, but a good picture can make your booktalk.

My goal is to get children to read, to help them see what fun it is, to show them how many doors it can unlock. I tell them this truth about myself: I carry a book with me almost everywhere I go. I carry one in the car and in to see the doctor, the dentist, or the beautician. I even took one into surgery once! When I go on a trip, I always take too many books because one of my greatest fears in life is not having anything on hand to read. I read in bed, in the bathtub, on lunch breaks, and anyplace else you can think of. I always have overdue fines, because I am a heavy library user.
